Both the house and the garage have their second floors tucked within the roof structure, using a combination of attic trusses (see below), rafters and shed dormers in the house.  This is a highly efficient configuration, maximizing usable space with minimal extra materials.  The garage has office/gym space above, which could potentially be living space - what we locally refer to as a "garage mahal"!
